As a foreign to this land it made me wonder why does qatar flag is maroon and white and separated by this zigzag line. So i searched about it, i even asked locals but i was amazed some of them don’t even know. So here are the following questions you might have in mind :

1. What’s the size?

Accurately speaking, Qatar flag has one of the most unique size, it has a ratio of 11:28 which makes it the only national flag having a width more than twice its height.

2. Is it Red or Maroon?

To give you a brief history, it was originally purple dye during the time of Mohammed Al Thani in 1847, he was the one who proposed it since Qatar during those time was known for producing purple dye.

However back in 1932, the British Navy suggested proposed that the flag be white and red, but Qatar rejected the red coloring and continued using a mixture of purple red instead.

Later on because of the country’s subtropical desert climate, the flags colors were prone to being tinted darker by the sun, thus in 1949 Qatar adopted maroon as the official color.

3. What’s the significance of White?

If you do not know Qatar got its independece from Britain on September 3, 1971. And it is directly related to the white portion which signifies the peace procured from signing anti-piracy treaties with the British.

4. How many triangular shape does it have and what it is for?

There are Nine serrated edges that’s separating the maroon and white.

This signifies inclusiveness of  Qatar as the 9th member of the ‘reconciled Emirates’ of the Persian Gulf with regards to the Qatari-British treaty in 1916.
